I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love the idea of joining a CSA.
If you're not familiar, it's a "Community Supported Agriculture". Basically, you buy a share of a farm and get stuff. They all work slightly different, but most let you choose the type of "basket" you want. Veggies, eggs, meat, etc. and then it's sort of a surprise. We have been part of one for years now and I love the not knowing and learning about new things. I also love the freshness, the menu planning that it causes and even how to prepare certain cuts of meat.
In Summer, we usually get a 1/4 share of produce and 2 meats, and 1/2 dozen eggs every week. It's really been great. But, we also love the winter where it comes every 2 weeks and we get @ 4 meats, a breakfast meat and 1 dozen eggs. There is nothing like farm fresh eggs. Ours provides special orders every week and there are baked offerings, canned goods and other items such as honey available for special order. You get a discount for paying for the whole season ahead of time and you're helping the farmers be secure in the season.
I highly recommend looking into it. For one in your area, check here.
Green? Yes it is! You're eating what is ripe in the season and in your area. You're supporting local farmers that are growing things in the same soil that you share. You are cutting down on fuel, costs and emissions because your food doesn't travel that far. You recycle your packaging, you're eating healthy and you aren't being pumped with hormones, antibiotics and whatever else they wanna feed ya. Your animals are treated humanely and actually have a nice life.
Get out there! Do it!
